Why does Atticus keep his markmanship a secret?

Atticus kept this a secret because he didn’t want Scout and Jem to look up to all of Atticus’s past.  As a child you would look up to your parents talents and you would want to learn more about the subject. Atticus doesn’t want Scout and Jem to get to into and ask everyone in the county about Atticus and his past.
