How is hypocrisy shown in Chapter 24?
The way that hypocrisy is shown in Chapter 24 is by a new character Mrs Merriweather. Mrs Merriweather started taking about the Mrunas (an african tribe) who are living with a man called J.Grimes Everett. ‘The poverty…the darkness…the immortality’ Mrs Merriweather is talking about how the Mrunas are living in the jungle.
‘I tell you there’s nothing more distracting than a sulky darky.’ Here Mrs Merriweather is insulting the fellow black people that live in the exact same county as her thinking that they are absolutely nothing. Mrs Merriweather is being a blatant hypocrite because she cares about other black people that she has never seen and only heard about but doesn’t care about the black people living in her town pretty much serving a worse punishment than the Mrunas.

Do you think Mrs Merriwether really cares about the Mrunas? Why would she pretend to do this?
